D.B.S.L. Team Cup 2008-2009

The cup final for Division 1 and the Division 2 Cup took place in Spawell Snooker Club on 25th April 2009.
Howth CYMS beat Glenalbyn 'A' to lift the Division 1 Cup, while Willows overcame Spawell 'E' in the Division 2 final.
Howth CYMS had accounted for Roadstone 'D' on the way to the final, while last year's cup winners Glenalbyn 'A'
knocked out Roadstone 'C' and Spawell 'D' to reach the final again. Both teams played off the same handicap. Martin Mulhern and Richard Hayes from Howth
were nominated first and they took on Mick Holohan and Pádraig Quinlan respectively from Glenalbyn 'A'. Martin and
Richard both won 2-1 in very tight matches to leave the score after the first 2 matches 4-2 to Howth. Nicky Clarke then
took on Paul Holohan, while Jim O'Neill played Naoise Kelly. Nicky and Jim both won the 1st frame of their matches to
leave the score at 6-2 to Howth, leaving Glenalbyn 'A' needing to win all remaining frames. Nicky won the 2nd frame
to win the cup for Howth, their first time in a number of years.
In Division 2, Willows made the final by knocking out Division 2 champions Ierne 'B' in the 1st round, and then
beating Guinness in the semi-final. On the other half of the draw, Spawell 'E' beat Roadstone 'E' in the 1st round,
followed by a good win over Division 2 runners-up Dublin Bus. Spawell 'E' received a 3 frame handicap against Willows
in the final. Willows nominated Peter Murphy and Umesh Bhagwan as their first 2 players and they took on Conor Harkan
and Alan Sweeny respectively off Spawell 'E'. Peter won 2-1 against Conor to reduce the deficit to 2 frames at 4-2
to Spawell 'E', but when Alan beat Umesh 2-1, the 3 frame lead for Spawell 'E' was restored leaving them just 2 frames from
victory. Alan Cullen then took on Karl Bryan and Alan won 2-1 to reduce the gap to 7-5 to Spawell 'E', but still left them one frame from
victory. John Butler needed to win 3-0 against Gavin Halvey in the final match for Willows to win, and this he achieved, giving
Willows victory in their 1st season playing in the league.
The Premier League final was between Spawell 'B and Roadstone 'B', and was played on Tuesday 28th April in Spawell Snooker Club.
Roadstone 'B' received a 3 frame handicap over Spawell 'B'.
Spawell 'B' nominated Brendan Murphy and Stephen Byrne as their first 2 players, and they took on Karl Ellis and Maurice Whelan respectively.
Brendan and Stephen both won 2-1 to reduce
the deficit to 1 frame. Roadstone 'B' needed 3 frames to win and this they achieved with Keiron Brennan drawing 1-1 with Gay Burns and Philip
Murphy taking the first 2 frames of his match against Brendan Thomas.
